Try Something Different

Just a “typical” day at the Valencia Community Garden.

In the garden we harvested 30 more pounds of cucumbers, planted field peas, weeded everywhere, and thinned okra.  We also harvested our first cantaloupe and found four small watermelons and two fire anthills.

Back in the classroom we wrote personal notes and addressed invitations for our spaghetti lunch.  Then it was time for a healthy snack.

Here’s where my figs make an appearance.  They were a new fruit for some of the participants.  First we tried them with cream cheese and curry.  It was a different taste and may need to be acquired for many.  More teens, however, were interested in the figs alone.

Such an adventurous summer!
