Living a Life

Day 191…

“Instructions for living a life.
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”
Mary Oliver

This evening and all day tomorrow I am committed to an NCATE appraisal.  The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education is visiting our college and because I am a part of the program, albeit (I love that word) adjunct, I will be at the session tonight in the university center ballroom (what in the world do I wear) and touring local schools during the day tomorrow.

How do I prepare?  What am I expected to say, or do?

Almost thirty years ago I was advanced to candidacy in the Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction program at the University of Texas at Austin.  I had taken a sabbatical from teaching and my time was up.  I was ready to be back in the classroom, trying  new ideas, testing theories I was now full of.  I never wrote the dissertation after I left Texas.  I’m more a hands-on kind of educator.  Just the idea of a “terminal” degree scares me.

So, am I the experienced, experiential learner the people of NCATE are wanting teacher education programs to produce?  We’ll see.
